Strategies to preserve file permissions?

I use age to encrypt directories of files: it works great! Now and then the directories contain executable scripts (bash, python etc.), the executable file permissions are not preserved, and I have to manually chmod the decrypted scripts.

I'd love to skip the manual chmod - would like to avoid encapsulating the directory content in a tar file.

I'm curious how others have handled age and file-permissions!

My solution was super simple - chmod --reference="#{src}" "#{tgt}" after every age encrypt and decrypt. Yeah!
