Saving Position in Comics Should Work Better

My cbz files aren't having my progress saved.

In "Simple Comic Help" I found this:

Auto-save open windows

Save all open comics on exit.

But that's the only option missing from Simple Comic settings.

I'm using a MacBook Air M1 and I have a separate folder for my comics outside of Downloads.

I'd have to look back, but I think the "auto-save open windows" option was removed when the code was migrated to use macOS' native auto-saving feature.

Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this. What OS are you using?

Okay, looking at the code, it might think @"NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows" is set to NO. If you want to change that, run the following in Terminal:

defaults write com.ToWatchList.SimpleComic NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows -bool yes

Thanks but it didn't work. I am using macOS 15.3.2. Is there a way for me to troubleshoot this?

My bad, it works now, just not when X-ing out a file.

returns NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows does not exist for me, yet when I quit the app, then open it from the Dock icon, I get all my previously opened windows, each on the previously visible page. Version 1.9.9, Sequoia 15.3.2

this is not a proper solution, it just saves the window state, which it means that if you open the file it creates a new window starting from 0 while also keeping the older window. I think the proper way would be to just save the page number of the opened file without relaying on macos restoring the window

This fixed my issue. However if I use command+W to close the window, not the program, and reopen the file, it is reset to page 1, as @Crepesman pointed out.

Using command+Q to close the program, then reopening it, stores the previous reading place.

So it sounds like we need to change the window close behavior to also remember position and also add a pref checkbox for this

No need to change the window close behavior. The user can already control this system-wide in Apple's System Settings > Desktop&Dock > Windows > Close Windows when quitting an application [ ]

but you can override the system setting for a single app with:

[NSUserDefaults.standardUserDefaults setBool:YES forKey:@"NSQuitAlwaysKeepsWindows"];

By coincidence when I installed the Tahoe beta as a new system, that bool was OFF after the install, when I'd always had it ON before.

You could add a tri-state control to the Simple Comic prefs: o always, o never, o follow system, but the user has to find that pref and someone has to explain to the user what it means.

Edit: My vote: an app should feel like it belongs on the platform. If behavior is system wide on a Mac, then an app should just do what the system does. Maybe have a Simple Comic FAQ explaining to the user how they can change the behavior for all apps.
