Provider description

Hello Openverse Team,

I would like to request an API key for a project called UrbanCompare, a free city insights and relocation comparison tool designed to help users understand the real-world cost of living, safety, climate, and neighborhood characteristics across major U.S. cities.

What the app does:
UrbanCompare aggregates only open, free, and public datasets (ACS, BLS, GSA, EIA, NOAA, etc.) to produce factual, real-dollar insights for 10–50 U.S. cities. We use Openverse exclusively for:

  • 3–5 representative skyline or cityscape photos per city
  • Only CC0, CC-BY, and CC-BY-SA licensed images
  • Full creator attribution (using the provided attribution field)

Estimated API usage:

  • ~10 cities per refresh cycle (initially)
  • 3–5 photos per city
  • Refresh frequency: once daily or less
  • Occasional re-scan when adding new cities (future upgrade: 50–100 cities)

This is not a high-volume or commercial image-harvesting product; it’s a public-benefit tool helping people compare cost-of-living data more clearly.

Why an API key would help:
Anonymous requests are fine for small tests, but an API key would prevent accidental rate limits when:

  • Automated daily refresh runs
  • Teachers, students, and families use the tool simultaneously
  • We expand beyond 10 cities

Thank you for the amazing work you do and for supporting open licensed media!

Best regards,
Gregory
