Could a FAQ entry be added to gem.coop? #17

Hey there folks,

I watched the recent discussions on the ruby-reddit in the last two weeks. I can't comment on it
(on reddit) because a certain heroku-moderator prevents me from discussing things there - years
old situation, so unaffected from any more recent events or discussions. :)

Now, some folks who are involved in gem.coop, have shared some news.

I know there is a newsletter for gem.coop, but I actually do not use newsletters. I found that
I was never able to keep up with traffic. Back when I was still using gmail, I had about +4000
unread messages. The way how I work (which isn't great) means that I work a bit on email,
then tire and do something else. The fate of excessive multi-tasking (not to be recommended).

Anyway. While reading some of the things on ruby-reddit, I am not so interested in the semi-AI
generated text from Ruby Central and I am also not super-curious about what emerges on the
ruby homepage either (unless it is a new ruby release - this is just about the only thing I am
still interested nowadays).

I am, however had, curious what happens with gem.coop. Now, I don't want to constantly ask
"is it ready yet" or just create too many issue requests here. I think one thing that not only I
but others, may find useful to have in the long run, is a FAQ, or a FAQ-like entry for gem.coop.

This can be updated, say, monthly or once in two months or so. Let me give an example,
an indirect one.

Some time ago duckinator, about two weeks ago, created this issue here:

#12

This is probably news to many - I did not know that the discussion already advanced quite a lot
there. Not everyone may be on the discord channel (I am not, for instance, I actually stopped using IRC
some time in 2011 or 2012 or something like that, before freenode was hijacked anyway, whenever that
was; primary reason was simply that I lack the time for IRC these days, I assume discord is not totally
different to oldschool IRC).

It would be nice to kind of see how gem.coop shapes up.

Would it be possible to add some kind of FAQ? This could be a separate file; or for the time being
simply be part of the main README. (It could also be added to the wiki, but my experience with
wikis on github is that people rarely look at them, so either in the main README, or a link to a
separate .md file, would be useful).

So what would be in that FAQ? Well, tons of things could be stored there.

Some of the questions I would have:

  • Is there a timeline for upcoming ideas and features in regards to gem.coop? (E. g. similar to duckinator's
issue, even if there is not a timeline actually; on that note, I think whoever is able to offer namespaces
and "package spaces" for users, e. g. to host stuff at gem.coop even when the name may be the same,
would be a pretty definite improvement, no matter if gem.coop or rubygems.org is doing this first).

  • Is it planned to offer accounts similar to rubygems.org? If so, is there a timeline for this? A beta stage?
(If this is not planned yet, that is also fine; the FAQ could mention this. The idea for the FAQ could be
that many other people have similar questions and this could be bundled together.)

  • If accounts may be available one day, are there plans to offer documentation on gem.coop directly
rather tha rubydoc.info? (Explanation for this question: I used to have the problem that the documentation
was uploaded via delay; and often did not work. This wasn't great because such a delay is not necessary
in the year 2025 IMO. Ideally documentation could be made available as-is. This also taps into my concern
about documentation in the ruby ecosystem in general; Ruby Central just babbles random AI text really
but they don't seem to really want to fix and improve anything internally. Documentation in the ruby
ecosystem has really gone downhill in general, also due to external factors such as google search really
being bad now. And probably more people using AI to search for things, which kind of also worsened
    the situation.)

Anyway. I think I originally had more questions, but I just typed this from memory, so I may have missed
some. Naturally I have some questions pertaining to "what happens next", but my primary focus is more
on gem.coop, not on Ruby Central and so forth. That is, the focus from a solo hobby developer (I am
"unaffiliated" to either "side", even though I also have my own opinion and kind of agreed with duckinator's
.pdf published - while my experience is naturally different, the total sum of things really paint a picture
that isn't that great looking for Ruby Central. This issue request can be closed at any moment in time by
the way, including when no FAQ is planned. I just wanted to suggest this once.)

PS: It may also be useful to open the "Discussion" tab; at the least I think this here may be better as a
discussion than a github issue, even if both are somewhat related. Discussion just feels a bit better
than an "issue request".
