Description of issue

brew install fd on a Raspberry Pi 5 (tested on Raspberry Pi OS and DietPi OS)

Then run fd and it will always output with:

<jemalloc>: Unsupported system page size
<jemalloc>: Unsupported system page size
memory allocation of 384 bytes failed

I cloned the fd repo to a Raspberry Pi 5 running Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit, bookworm). cargo install --path . (cargo 1.89.0) and the resulting binary works just fine. So the problem is something to do with the build process for brew.

Works for me on a Raspberry Pi 5 running Ubuntu:

$ fd triple.h
Cellar/llvm/20.1.8/include/llvm/TargetParser/Triple.h

What's the output of getconf PAGESIZE? Mine is 4096. The page size of your system may be 16K. If that's the case, then this is an issue with jemalloc (which Rust uses) as mentioned in raspberrypi/bookworm-feedback#107. You can try the workaround in raspberrypi/bookworm-feedback#107 (comment).

There is an option of updating superenv to build with JEMALLOC_SYS_WITH_LG_PAGE=14 (or JEMALLOC_SYS_WITH_LG_PAGE=16 for 64K support which is what fd decided for their binaries - https://github.com/sharkdp/fd/blob/v10.2.0/Cross.toml). Though won't impact binaries until next rebuild/bump.

Yeah, they switched to defaulting to 16k page size on Raspberry Pi 5 for Raspberry Pi OS based distros. It's not worth switching the page size back since everything else works and that is just likely to break something else.

brew reinstall fd should get you a bottle with support for larger page size - Homebrew/homebrew-core#234516
