Description of issue

Hello,
Every time I upgrade AdGuard cask I have to configure it. Previous settings are not applied.
Any idea? Thanks

This is likely due to how Homebrew upgrades the adguard cask. Since AdGuard itself provides self-update functionality, you'll need to rely on that instead of brew upgrade --greedy if you don't want this to happen.

There's something not entirely clear to me:

• since adguard cask allows self-update then it's excluded from brew upgrade
• --greedy forces to update it

Where it says that settings are not kept with --greedy?

This part of the documentation:

With the uninstall/reinstall strategy, macOS thinks the app is being deleted without any intent to reinstall it, and so it removes some internal metadata for the old app, including where it appears in the Dock and Launchpad and which permissions it’s been granted.

It's the uninstall-then-reinstall process that may have purged your previous configuration.

According to doc:

Homebrew defaults to in-place upgrades when it has the necessary permissions. Otherwise, it will use the uninstall/reinstall strategy.

I've double checked my Terminal.app has the permissions: “App Management” and “Full Disk Access”

This will be because the application is installed using a pkg. When you run brew upgrade <token>, internally Brew first runs brew uninstall <token> before running brew install <token> which works perfectly in 99.9% of the cases. For Adguard, the uninstaller provided by the developer likely removes everything, including the settings, which is why you are experiencing this issues.

In some other cases, we have modified the uninstall process to install everything except for the user settings, but this will be more difficult for adguard because it utilises a pkg installer, so we cannot choose what is uninstalled.
