How to disable the braille spinner?

Description of issue

Recent versions of homebrew have added a braille character spinner. Unfortunately, this causes total chaos and generates hundreds of lines of extra output when running brew inside emacs'shell-mode, where I normally run my terminal sessions.

How can I disable the spinner, is there an environment variable I can set or something?
