Trouble with rendering stroke order numbers

This may be an error in my own emacs config. I apologize if so. But kanji-mode is not rendering numbers correctly when displaying stroke order on my laptop running OpenBSD-current.

I tried to install the latest Kakasi as instructed but the ./configure step fails. But I don't think this has anything to do with this issue though. I'm going to debug that later and see if I can get the version in the ports tree updated.

Sorry if I've done something stupid in emacs. I'm pretty new to it. Any help or advice you could give me would be very appreciated. I'm only opening an issue because I haven't had a problem with numbers rendering in other modes I've tried and there wasn't any mention of common emacs errors that would affect this mode in the instructions. I'm very sorry if I've wasted your time with something common and well known. I wasn't sure what to search for when I attempted to debug it myself.

I just realized my initial post wasn't very helpful. I'm running emacs 30.1 on OpenBSD-beta 7.7 (today's snapshot). kanji-mode was installed with use-package from MELPA. I deleted all of the kanji-mode related files from ~/.emacs.d/ and re-installed. Still no joy. kanji-mode is also not automatically enabled with text-mode. So I'm leaning towards the melpa package being the issue at the moment.

I will try from source later when I get some more time to see if it's just an issue with the package on melpa and try to debug my local system. Thanks for your time.

First of all, stop apologizing :). It's perfectly OK to seek help if something is not working in your setup. Secondly, thank you for raising this problem as an issue - this communication mechanism exists, among other things, for just such situations.

The symptoms I can see in your screenshot are weird. If there's a problem rendering SVGs, I'd sooner expect the entire image to be garbled, not just the numbers. I can think of a couple of potential reasons, so let's gather some data:

1. What is your Emacs version?
2. Please check the variable image-use-external-converter and see what value it is set to.
3. Try opening the SVG file that gave you trouble (kanji/06f22.svg from kanji-mode's subdirectory in your elpa) in an external program (e.g. a web browser) and see if it has the same problem.
4. Have you seen similar problems with other kanji characters?

image-use-external-converter is not set. SVG file renders correctly when opened in firefox. I tested several kanji characters and they all render garbled.

OK, so it means the problem is likely with Emacs itself. Can you try setting the variable to t?

Okay. I set image-use-external-converter to "t" in init.el. No change although ctrl+c ctrl+c works as it should in image-mode now. I'm starting to wonder if the OpenBSD package is not compiled with proper image support. I have not really used image-mode much beyond displaying a .png in the dashboard so I didn't stumble upon it until now. I do have imagemagick and ffmpeg installed on this system but I don't think emacs is using them as far as I can tell. I'll try to build it from source myself to see if the problem goes away. I checked and confirmed my version of emacs is rendering .svg files correctly. I also properly set image-use-external-converter to "on" instead of t. If you have any ideas let me know. My next guess is fonts or something screwy in my ENV. As far as I can tell it's rendering other SVGs correctly. I downloaded a few random ones from the internet.

Also yes I know I'm overly apologetic and it's annoying. Force of habit. I don't like to bother people with my problems.

BTW, I love your WM setup. Is this i3? Could you maybe share your configuration?

You might be right about fonts causing the problem. I looked inside the SVGs and the part responsible for stroke numbers follows the pattern of

	<text transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 12.75 18.13)">1</text>

	<text transform="matrix(1 0 0 1 7.50 88.50)">3</text>

I don't know enough about SVG rendering, but I suspect this might be making use of some external font information. Could you post your font settings e.g. from custom-set-faces? Here's mine in case you want to try it out:

The WM pictured in above screenshots is my own hacked together version of dwm running on OpenBSD's xenocara (their version of Xorg).
